LET THE BATTLE BEGIN.
It’s that time of year again - the part time officer exec elections in SUBU. The executive committee is made up of a fantastic group of student volunteers who meet once a week to discuss student issues. Louise, Murray, Sophie and I couldn’t possibly represent all the 18,000 students we have here at BU - which is why we need the executive committee. We expect them to talk to students in between our weekly meetings and report back any issues or concerns they hear. We also like them to get involved with campaigns and become ambassadors for SUBU.
Running in an election is a great experience. I loved walking around uni with a red bucket, full of red sweets, with red balloons, as part of my Ruby Red campaign when I ran in the full time officer elections.
It’s no easy task walking up to students to ask them to vote for you…especially if they look at you with a blank expression as if to say “who are you? what are you doing? please go away and leave me to eat my lunch and talk to my friends” So to all of those who are running - keep at it, you’re doing a great job!
It’s important to consider who you believe can best represent you and your views before voting. Please read the candidates manifestos here or watch their videos/read their manifestos and vote for your new executive committee here.
Happy Voting! :) Love Ruby x

Your STUDENT SHOUT!

Do you want to CHANGE something at BU?

Do you want to STOP something at BU?

Do you want to START something at BU?

The Student Shout is your chance to get your voice heard. It’s a mass meeting where your issues and concerns are discussed and debated. If a motion is passed at the event, then we have to act on your decision. You can influence real change within the Union and the University, as well as question what we’re doing and hold us to account for our actions. After all, we were elected to represent you!

A big thing on our agenda at the moment is the NUS National Demo on 21st November, called #demo2012 Educate. Employ. Empower. The NUS have organised a mass student march through the central of London to show our disappointment at the government’s betrayal and encourage them to put our education and future emplyment as a priority in their agenda. Do you think SUBU should go as a united force of students? This will be debated and discussed at the Student Shout so make sure you come along and get your voice heard!

To submit a motion please click here.

The BU Student Development Award is a great scheme run by the Uni. You need 100 points to pass the award and you can gain this from a range of extra-curricular involvement, including all things SUBU. Each activity you get involved with offers a different number of points.

In order to achieve the award you have to produce your own E-Portfolio with evidence from your work outside of study. You also have to produce a reflective writing piece which explains what you learnt from each activity. The award enables you to demonstrate employable attributes which could help you get that job you’ve always wanted!

I completed the award last year when I was a student and it was a great scheme to be involved with (I’m in the video about 40 seconds in!) Volunteering and getting involved in extra curricular activities is a great way to enhance your CV as well as meeting new people and making friends. I think it makes you a more interesting person, having a hobby and an interest outside of your academic studies and social life.

Any questions about the involvement opportunities SUBU offer please email me: suvpcampaigns@bournemouth.ac.uk.

Applications for the award are now OPEN! To find out more or to sign up, please click here.

katrinad93 asked: hey ruby, im at bournemouth uni too, have you got a skype? would be nice to chat to somebody in the same boat as me :') tehe xo

Hi, No I don’t have skype. But if you have any questions or want to get involved in subu please email me: suvpcampaigns@bournemouth.ac.uk or come and see myself, Louise, Murray or Sophie in the SUBU office above Dylan’s bar and we can talk through all the opportunities SUBU offer. Ruby :)

Liam Burns, the president of the NUS responded to Nick Clegg’s apology yesterday. Representing what I’m sure are the views of many students across the country, he said Mr Clegg’s apology is just not good enough. Nick may have apologised for making a promise he couldn’t keep, but he hasn’t apologised for how he acted.

It seems the value of education has fallen under the government’s radar and was put at the back of their agenda. Now, the new generation of students are paying the price, in what is already a challenging economic environment.

NUS have organised a National Demo in London on 21st November called ‘Educate, Employ, Empower” with the aim to remind the government education and employment should be a priority. What do you think? Should we go as a united force from the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University? Or do you think it’s a waste of time.

Come to the Student Shout on 16th October and lets debate it - 1pm to 3pm in Lees Lecture Theatre. See you there!

That’s all for now,

Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg apologised yesterday for making a pledge to oppose any increase in university tuition fees. He claims to have learnt from his mistake and vows he will not make a promise unless he is “absolutely clear” the party can stick to it.

However, I agree with NUS when they say he should be apologising to those he has betrayed and not for making the pledge. NUS President, Liam Burns said: “The Liberal Democrats’ commitment at the 2010 election was to abolish fees, a policy they’ve had for a decade. It’s what they said on the doorstep and in their leaflets, and every one of their MPs signed a pledge to back it up. It’s why many students and young people voted for the party.”

To see what Nick Clegg said before the election in 2010, please click here.

The Liberal Democrats have lost the trust of many in the younger generation. He should be apologising for breaking a promise and not for making the pledge in the first place - that is the apology we want to hear.

Are you convinced by his apology? Please click here to vote in the Guardian’s Poll.

That’s all for now,
